A pensioner in his 80s has had his driving licence revoked on the spot following a serious collision involving a car and a cyclist in Freshwater yesterday evening (Tuesday).
Emergency services were called to the crash on The Causeway – near the junction with Middle Road – at just before 18:20, as first reported by Island Echo.
The injured cyclist, a man in his 60s and from the West Wight, sustained a serious leg injury in the collision.
Police have now confirmed that the driver behind the wheel of a red Mini, an elderly male, failed a roadside eyesight test conducted at the scene by officers. As a result, his licence has been revoked with the DVLA informed.
It appears the Mini driver came around a bend and collided head-on into the cyclist, leaving a ‘bullseye’ on the windscreen – indicating the force of the impact.

Look like a nasty smash , hope the cyclist isn’t too badly hurt
Dreadful hope chap on bike is ok..
‘Bullseye’
Here’s what you could have won?
Might be a pair of glasses
Did the cyclist also have to take a roadside eye test?
Is it to be assumed the cyclist was also moving at the time of the accident?
As much as i hate the problems cyclists cause on the roads, especially during rush hour, and the negative attitude most of the cyclists have, I do hope this chap comes out okay, no one should be having to worry about other drivers eyes when out and about!
i Drive assuming everyone is trying to kill me with their ridiculous SUV’s and I’ve never felt safer
I think 80 years of age should be the maximum driving age.
No one cares what you think
In recent weeks a number of older people have asid to me that they feel that older drivers are being “picked on” because of the new requirements to demonstrate physical fitness to have a driving licence renewed. My response is always that if someone is fit and capable of driving safely they will have no problem obtaining a renewal and if they cannot demonstate this ability they should not be on the road. This would appear to be a case in point. The argument is always that older people know when they are no longer safe to drive and stop voluntarily but sadly that is simply not supported by the evidence.
If you are fit to drive, drive, if you are not then don’t, regardless of age. I’m knocking on, sight seems ok but reaction times are slower than the post. I no longer drive, and a bus ride is so relaxing. I’m not looking for or paying to park, no heart attack when seeing what a full tank costs.
So you have to wait for a bus as opposed to trying to park, paying tòo, worried about a ticket, walking to the shops, when the bus goes right into town, no trips solely for fuel. No running costs, depreciation or bull sh**t mechanics. I don’t miss the car overall. Forever looking for speed cameras and traps, cursing other drivers and bl**dy cyclists. Use the bus, there’s no fuss.leave the car, on the island nowhere’s far. Take a car to the mainland, the trip is ruined by the ferry fare.
Well said. Most older people have the sense to know when to stop driving but, sadly, many suffer from mild dementia, including my own lovely mother, and no longer possess the judgement skills to know when to stop. She’s a nightmare behind the wheel but she is stubborn and refuses to listen. The authorities do need to step in. I know from experience that families have no rights when it comes to stopping their loved ones from driving with declining health and eyesight.
Ageism once again. On the whole older drivers are safer and better. Meanwhile the drunken boy racers go on and on terrifying the islanders. Never see their licences immediately revoked.
Narrow road and bad bend coming off that Causeway
By the look of the photo, the mini was on it’s own side of the road. By the look of the position of the ”bullseye” on the windscreen it would indicate that the cyclist was in the MIDDLE of the road,
or over the center of the road on the mini’s side, so how is the mini driver to blame. Looks like a typical case of age discrimination to me. ”The driver came round a bend and collided head on with the cyclist” who MUST have been in the middle of the road, like they quite often are
If this or any other driver cannot pass a simple roadside eye test then they bloody well should have their licenses taken away before they kill or maim some poor bugger.
