Homes in and around central parts of the Island are experiencing a large power cut this afternoon (Saturday).
110 known postcode areas have been affected by the outage which includes areas in and around Newport, Wootton Bridge, Carisbrooke, Shorwell, Limestone, Brighstone, Calbourne and Newbridge.
Power was lost at 13:00 and engineers are aiming to have power restored by 19:00 this evening.

A spokesperson from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks has said:
“We’re sorry for the loss of supply.
We currently have a fault affecting the areas listed.
“Our engineers are on site working hard to get the power back on as quickly as they can.

My elderly aunt lives in that area but she is blind so it should make no difference to her

Hardly a nice comment, whether true or not. You should check on her, as boilers heating etc need power to work even if gas. OR is she leaving her cash to the Dogs home, which I would not blame her.

Does she not need electricity for other things such as kettles heating cooking tv etc! Rather a selfish attitude.
I do hope someone is looking out for her, even if she has gas central heating, without electricity her heating won’t work and if she has a WightCare lifeline, that won’t work either, so to say blithely it should make no difference to her is a bit much. I also hope she is registered with Scottish & Southerns as a vulnerable person in event of power failure.
Does she not use electricity for tv heating water cooking making tea etc? Selfish attitude!
Wait until we all HAVE to have electric cars.
Lot of people overloading the shaky system will cause even more failures in supplies.

Maybe you should read up on the technology first before making stuff up. Electric cars control their charging and will charge during the night when electricity is cheap and not in use. Moreover a lot of work is being done to use the cars as a load balancing system to smooth the load leading to a more reliable network. Often these large scale outages are because when a sub station trips the rest of the system is unable to coupe to the extra demand and causes other parts of the system to fail safely. The reason it takes time for it to be turned back on is because they can not just turn it all back on at once. Using the connected EV’s these kind of cascade failures and be avoided and the recovery time can be improved.
More aptly named, as ‘easily fooled islander’.
My tooth brush ‘controls its charging’, meaning nothing when related to the power grid, all it means as it reaches a full charge it limits the amount of current needed, and then finally ends charging when fully charged.
IF an EV slowed the rate of charge when high demand on the gird occurred to ‘save’ overloading the grid supply, then those wishing for a long journey would not be too impressed if stuck covering only half of their intended journey.
“Load balancing” still requires the same AMOUNT of energy consumption, it just means phases or districts with ‘less’ demand, can be switched over to the ‘high demand’ areas. This has been utilised for years, without EV’s, which will only ADD to demand, making LESS ‘low demand’ areas available to ‘cover’ those now in a shortfall of energy.
The last paragraph is absolute tosh when suggesting thousands of EV’s all ‘pulling power’ will allow the overloaded power stations to be ‘turned on more rapidly’, for NOW when night time demand is low, it is far easier to re-connect, than during the day, when the huge sudden demand causes arcing. So when we have tens of thousands of cars charging at night, and lsome during the day, the demand for power will be greater at both day and night than it currently is.
Also, you correctly say that cars will likely mostly be charged ‘overnight’ yet NO Solar will be providing that ‘green power’ then, so unless windy, many will revert to cycle clips, OR we will be going back to oil, gas, coal, to power our ever expanding populations needs.
I know far, far more than you realise about such.
How many people in this country are trained to do it and also its not a 12v Ac its about 600v dc as far as i know
