The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team (CRT) were tasked to the discovery of a possible piece of ordnance at Alum Bay yesterday (Monday).
Solent Coastguard received a report from a member of the public that an object had been found, prompting the mobilisation of the CRT at 15:44.
The incident was assisted by the member of the public who managed to take a picture of the object. It’s location was marked by staff from The Needles Landmark Attraction.
The photo was sent off to Portsmouth’s Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team, who confirmed the item to be safe. It was confirmed as the top cap of a fired flare.
A spokesperson for Needles CRT has said:
“Due to how it was bedded in the sand on the beach, and in the tide line, the member of the public wouldn’t of known this [that it was the top of a fired flare], so they did the right thing in calling HM Coastguard. Always better to be safe than sorry”.
The incident was brought to a close shortly after 17:00.
