It has been announced that £72,000 of funding from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero will see solar panels installed on the roof of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service’s station at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport, saving up to £21,000 a year in energy costs.
Last month, it was revealed that the Isle of Wight NHS Trust had been awarded a cashpot to install new solar panels, as part of the first major project for Labour Government’s Great British Energy – news welcomed by Isle of Wight West MP, Richard Quigley.
The funding awarded will not only help the Trust to deliver against its plans to be more sustainable by reducing emissions but will also deliver financial savings estimated to be around £21,000 a year.
Work will begin later this year.
These new solar panel installation projects are expected to deliver savings nationally of around £8.6million a year, and up to £260million over the panel’s lifetime across the NHS.
Trevor Mose, Head of Sustainability and Energy at Isle of Wight NHS Trust and Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, says:
“We recognise the impact our services have on the environment and are delighted the team have been awarded this funding which will help us provide more energy efficient services to our communities. Thank you to everyone who has been involved in supporting us with this work so far.”

What are they running in an ambulance station to use more than £21,000 of electricity a year in the first place? Is it more than a garage?
That’s just where they are sited…they will be connected via an inverter to the main generator that serves the whole of the hospital.
Thanks, that wasn’t clear in the article.
Probably the car wash or charging points.
A complete waste of money.
I read on The Independent newspaper a couple of
days ago that UK scientists are attempting to
Dim the sun
Lol, so less sun, what is the point of solar panels.
The world as been dealing with the climate by itself
for years, it does not need people interfering with nature.
The UK scientists are attempting to research and model IF the sun were able to be dimmed, what bioengineering effects that would have on global warming and climate change, that we as humans have been interfering with for over 150 years. It COULD disrupt rainfall elsewhere, so although OUR scientists have been tasked with running experiments, it’s more likely that any targeting will be done in countries where the sun is hottest and rainfall lowest, as we don’t see much sun as it is.
Shanklin as the sunshine record of the UK
lol
Ok ,they are asking for permission to run a solar park at Wotton, why not say as part of the planning permission you have to install the solar panels on the ambulance station roof, seems a reasonable trade off and I bet they could do far cheaper than the NHS has been quoted.
