The Island’s veteran community and members of the public are invited along to a veteran’s engagement event at St Mary’s Hospital on Thursday 2nd March.
As part of a new initiative, the Isle of Wight NHS Trust is working with local partner organisations to ensure that they raise awareness of the availability of help that is on offer to support veterans and their families here on the Isle of Wight.
On the day the Trust’s Medical Director, Steve Parker, will also be unveiling a new plaque to mark the Trust achieving its Veteran Aware accreditation.
The event will open at 10:30 at the Conference Room, opposite the restaurant for members of the public and staff to meet with representatives of the Trust’s partner organisations. The Island’s High Sheriff, Kay Marriott JP will also be in attendance alongside Chair of the Isle of Wight Council, Councillor Claire Critchison.
Mr Steve Parker, Medical Director and Clinical Champion for Veteran Aware, said:
“It is vital that we provide appropriate support for our veterans and armed forces community.
“This event is the next step as a Veteran Aware Accredited organisation to make sure we are supporting as many of our veteran and armed forces community with the right care that they need”
All are welcome to drop in to meet representatives of partner organisations, between 10:30 and 13:30, to find out what support is available to veterans and their families and how they can access help here on the Isle of Wight.
Armed Forces personnel and their loved ones have often lived through experiences in a way not experienced by the public, which creates a specific need for how these people are cared for.
The Trust was awarded its Veteran Aware Accreditation in December 2022 and the event will build on the commitment to establish links to appropriate nearby veteran services, identify veterans to ensure they receive appropriate care and raise awareness of veterans.
Staff at the Trust are also undertaking specific training and members of the public are encouraged to let a member of staff know if they are an Armed Forces Veteran or serving member.

Cannot believe this hasn’t been in place before now, how narrow sighted of the NHS. PTSD is one of the worse ailments our Ex forces and veterans of past wars have, but PTSD also arises in civilian life and the service sometimes obtained for help and assistance for some that fall into this category has been very poor in the past.
