Residents and motorists alike were in fear for their safety this morning after a loose horse charged against traffic and missed a number of people by seconds.
Two local Ryde residents were riding their horses along Ryde Esplanade and North Walk shortly before heading to Appley Beach.
One eye witness has reported to Island Echo that one rider fell from the horse when she got caught up in the incoming tide before the horse galloped across the sands, narrowly missing a number of dog walkers in the area.
The horse continued to gallop along North Walk towards oncoming vehicles shortly followed by a second horse rider in pursuit, who was also travelling against the traffic.
Bystanders looked on helplessly as the loose horse crossed over the A3055 Ryde Esplanade and into the backstreets of Ryde.
A number of Police officers in the area were alerted to the incident and proceeded to locate the horse to prevent any injuries or damage.
The horse was contained and reunited with its rider more than a mile across town at Quarry Road, near to St John’s Train Station.
No one has been injured in this incident, however this story highlights the dangers of horse riding and the continued argument that horses should not be allowed on the public highway.
