Newport Timebank has taken a step closer to being established thanks to a donation from Newport Parish Council.
At a recent steering group meeting Cllr Peter Whiteman, vice-chairman of the Parish Council, presented a cheque for £750 to the group.
Following an interesting presentation at the Annual Parish Meeting from West Wight Timebank, Cllr Jones-Evans added an item to the June agenda for consideration of a donation towards the
setting up of a Newport branch. Cllrs Brodie and Jones-Evans attended an inaugural meeting of the Newport Timebank, along with the Local Area Coordinators and subsequently the Parish Council unanimously agreed the donation for this interesting and innovative scheme.
Timebanking is a way of linking up the skills and needs of the community. For every hour that is put in, an hour’s time credit is ‘banked’ which can be ‘spent’ when needed. There is no regular commitment required and no cash is involved – only time. It’s free to join and there is no age barrier.
Cllr Whiteman said:
“I was delighted to make this presentation on behalf of Newport Parish Council, this scheme will strengthen our community and all age groups can take part and benefit. We hope the Parish Council can help the scheme grow by giving further support in the years to come”.
