A new website has been launched that allows Islanders to see where they can fuel their motor for the best price.
Launched and designed on the Island, the website – named findcheapfuel.com – scans the fuel prices from the major fuel suppliers (Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Tesco) every minute. Currently, the cheapest petrol station is Asda in Newport where unleaded fuel costs 150.70p and diesel 153.70p.
Whilst many still feel the cost of fuel is high, it has fallen a lot since fuel was priced at nearly £2 per litre for both petrol and diesel back in June 2022.
The site was built by Wight Hat Ltd, a small web company based in Cowes.
The company also runs sites that track the status of the Floating Bridge and another that carries out calculations for metric conversions.

BTW, it’s not just the IoW,.. it seems to cover the whole of the UK,… Useful if you manage to afford the ferry to go to the North Island,,.. you can find where to get cheeper fuel to claw back some of what you spent on the ferry….

Also a concern with EV (electric vehicles is the fact some insurance companies are no longer insuring them.
Those that do are raising the insurance premium several hundred percent. In many cases that’s in the areas of £6,000 per year! Yikes!
What a load of nonsense! Not true. Premiums are massive for top of the range Teslas because they are targeted by thieves but standard insurance on mainland for EVs is about £800 per annum.
Absolute gibberish.
If you have something like a £100k Tesla S Plaid or an £80k Audi A8 e-tron then, yeah, that’s going to cost you.
The average annual insurance for something like an MG 4 is about £600.

And the recent car transporter that was towed into Holland after it was gutted due to an EV catching fire. One of the crew died as well.

Precisely your diesel at the moment is 10p cheaper pre litre than mine at Sainsbury’s Ferndown and 2p cheaper than even Costco Southampton!!!!
I got a 2nd hand Nissan Leaf for 6k six months ago. Only 20k on the lock, still got all it’s range. ideal for the island. And I charge it from my solar. Had free fuel the last six months. Stop burning stuff and join the electric car gang. Also safter, so many petrol cars catch fire, and once the tank goes pop and the tires light up, no way putting that out. Just have to wait for it burn out, nothing left. My e car is so much safer.
Electric cars are fine, if:
a. you can afford to pay a massive premium over an equivilent petrol / diesel car
b. you don’t need to do long journeys
& it the battery catches fire in your Leaf,…”no way putting that out. Just have to wait for it burn out, nothing left.” LOL

A Mk 1 Leaf will cost an average of £500 a year in insurance. Much the same as a similar petrol car.
Most people driving on the Island do no more than 30 or 40 miles a day. As fred suggests, his Leaf’s 80-ish mile range is fine.
And then we come to the fire FUD. Won’t even go there because you know as well as I do that electric cars catch fire nowhere near as often as EVs and they, too, almost always burn to the ground.

Interesting and wonder what would happen if a battery car caught fire in the middle of the car space on a ferry.
Today’s news at Luton airport that the fire was probably an electric vehicle battery fault that was the initial cause. There would be carnage if this was to happen on a ferry (or in a tunnel!)
The problem is Fred some people actually enjoy driving and enjoy driving a nice car, your car is one of the worse cars around, hence why it cost you 6 grand! And it’s not free fuel Fred unless some really generous chap came along and fitted all that solar crap to your house for free? Your electric car gang is small and will remain small, this worlds going to burn stuff till there’s nothing left to burn, you arnt going to change it, so I and many others will just carry on and ridicule people like you in your dreadful little cars, have fun driving on those wintery days coming soon, you may lose a few miles of your beloved range when you put your heater on!

Let’s look at the new MG 4 X Power. £37k gets you an EV that has 430hp, hits 60 in 3.8 seconds and has a range of 240 miles. That’s supercar performance at a fraction of the price.

I wonder how true miles you would get driving it like that? Would have been helpful if it covered all petrol stations on the island, not just the major supermarkets, as the petrol station on Lushington Hill was cheaper than all the major supermarkets for a short while earlier in the year.

which is fine for the larger ones,.. but mre hassel for smaller ones, especially if they are (as they usually are) more expensive, as it would put people off going there,.. sort of negative advertising…
So why is fuel 4p a litre dearer at Morrison’s Lake station than their Newport one? Let’s hazard a guess. Could it be that the powers that be think along the lines of – “The mugs who live around this area won’t drive the extra miles to Newport because it would negate the difference in cost per litre and there is no one else around here near that price, ha ha!!” PURE GREED!!
Maybe one of them hasn’t had a delivery of fresh fuel at a lower price yet.

It’s not just the petrol, some of the food and goods inside the shop are higher priced in lake than Newport too!

I’ve been using http://www.petrolprices.com for years. Pop in your postcode and you will receive, within a 5 mile radius, details of the cheapest petrol & diesel.
I mean, good for them but there have been sites for this for years.
I used to use one, when I drove.
I stopped driving about 8 years ago, so tells you how long ago!
So how is that going to make any difference??? they all the same over hyped prices..so pointless..
