This Friday (26th January) marks the start of National Storytelling week and across the country, people are making a point of telling tales. Here on the Island, there are several events taking place, including the chance to hear a brilliant young storyteller from London, Sarah Liisa Wilkinson, regale her listeners with ‘Strange Girls- Beautiful monsters’, to be held on Tuesday 30th January from 19:00 – 21:30 at Cowes Combined Services Social Club. Sarah says about her stories:
“This is a world of Baba Yagas and bloodstained dolls, wide-eyed girls and spoon-wielding sisters, lovestruck trolls, and lovers who hide monstrous secrets behind their charms. Dark, funny and enchanted – these are stories with iron teeth”.
One of the event organisers, Island storyteller Sue Bailey said:
“Sarah Liisa doesn’t just tell a story –she brings her tales alive so that you feel like you are in the story. Her choice of words, her physical expression and her energetic style all underpin the structure and content of the story. If you have never been to a live storytelling event before, come to this. You will be in for a treat”
Tickets cost £10 for the event and are available through Ticket Source https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/whats-on?q=Strange%20girls. To start the National Storytelling events on the Island, ‘Tis Tales teller, Monty, returns to Babushka Books in Shanklin on Friday (26th January), as part of a new collaboration with Ryde-based harpist Theresa Ellis. The set promises a magical evening of music and story featuring “Traditional Tales from England and Wales”. On Sunday evening, there is a showcase storytelling event at Monkton Arts for local storytellers who have been participating in the Somewhen Storytelling supported workshops, run by Nell Phoenix over the last few months.

Seems to be running a bit late for a kids event on a school night.
