Residents at Old Charlton House care home in Cowes celebrated National Dog Day with some wonderful visits from cuddly canines and their owners.
A plea went out on Facebook back in July requesting whether anyone had a well-behaved dog that they could bring to visit the residents on the day to make it a special occasion for them.
10 dogs visited throughout the course of the day, and they went around the home saying hello to everyone and giving cuddles and kisses, receiving pats and fuss in return. It created a happy atmosphere within the home and everyone smiled more, laughed more and there was increased conversation.
The benefits of animal therapy are well documented. It decreases depression, reduces stress, boosts relaxation, improving mood and general well-being. Physically it lowers blood pressure, slows the heart rate and regulates hormones.
Activity Coordinator, Debbie Webb, said:
“We would like to thank everyone who so generously gave up their precious time to bring their dogs to visit us. They have no idea just how important a role they have played in bringing positivity, happiness and joy to our residents. As soon as we entered each room their gaze focussed on the dogs and their immediate reaction was to smile. The residents had an absolute ball and it was a brilliant day”.
Resident, Marilyn, said:
“The effect it had on everyone was wonderful, they were smiling, laughing and I think the dogs enjoyed themselves too”.
