The cost of filling up the family car is on the rise once again with motorists seeing the pump price jump by more than 7p a litre in recent weeks.
After months of tumbling prices, the cost of petrol and diesel at forecourts across the Isle of Wight is creeping up.
At 1 of the busiest petrol stations on the Island, Tesco Ryde, the cost of diesel, for example, has gone from 144.9p/l to 151.9p/l as of Friday – an increase of 7p per litre.
A weak pound against the dollar and rising oil prices, forced by a restriction in output, have been blamed for the sudden jump and it seems like the Brent crude price may continue to rise in the coming weeks. It sits at around $83 per barrel today, which is considerably higher than the $71 it was in June.
However, year-on-year things are still much better than they were. In June 2022, diesel was sitting at a record high of 197.9p/l, falling to 181.9p/l by August. 12 months on the UK average is now 150.6p/l for diesel, although this is the highest it has been since May.
A recent report by the Competition and Markets Authority has highlighted that supermarkets are creaming an extra 6p per litre in profit.

With the cost of living crisis, I think it’s great that the fossil fuel industry is increasing global warming, less heating costs for everyone!

(even in winter I get enough). EV’s and Solar are setting motorists free from governmental and corporate control. Green tech democratises energy generation, puts it back in the hands of the people.

it is governments that issue the licences in far away countries to corporates that mine the land to extract the metals and minerals needed to make EV’s and Solar panels. It is fossil fuel heavy plant machinery that is used to do the mining with, as EV simply cannot do it.

Clean, green renewables are on the rise. Coal, the dirtiest fuel, is dying. Or so the energy transition line goes. The reality, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), is that global coal production, consumption, and seaborne volumes are all at all-time highs in 2023.

What happened a few months ago when an official report stated that the motorist was being overcharged by at least 6p a litre as the price of a barrel of oil had dropped? Absolutely nothing. So the greedy money grabbing garages and supermarkets will keep on putting the prices up knowing that we will have no choice but to pay it to increase their already eye watering profits.
