The main road between Ryde and Sandown is flooded this morning (Friday), resulting in travel delays in the Brading area.
Morton Common – between Yarbridge and Avenue Road – is currently ‘under water’ as a result of the high river levels on the Eastern Yar overnight.
The road is described as being just about passable with care.
Normally, drivers unwilling to venture through the flood water can divert via Yaverland, however, the road is currently closed for resurfacing leaving motorists very little choice.
The alternative, significant diversion is via Knighton and Apse Heath.
A flood warning was issued for the Eastern Yar yesterday evening. That warning proved true with firefighters called to Newchurch and Alverstone overnight.
UPDATE @ 07:45 – Island Roads have reopened Yaverland Road to cars only – no HGVs – due to Morton Common being impassable.
UPDATE @ 08:58 – Morton Common has been closed by Island Roads to all traffic.
Golf Links Road has also been closed this morning.
UPDATE @ 12:42 – Yaverland Road has now been closed to all vehicles to allow Island Roads to continue resurfacing works.
However, Morton Common has not re-opened meaning all vehicles are currently being diverted via The Downs to Arreton. Local traffic can use Knighton and Newchurch.
UPDATE @ 12:48 – Island Echo is now told that Yaverland Road is to remain open due to the travel disruption.
Morton Common remains closed.
REMINDER @ 15:05 – Morton Common remains closed. Yaverland Road is open.
UPDATE SATURDAY @ 12:00 – Morton Common is now open to traffic in both directions.

Just saw a number 2 bus go past the house so I assume they can still get through – for the moment at least.
Should tar mac the railway line. That keeps running.
How do you come to that assumption
Because the railway service on the island are shambles. And there just as bad for letting people know when there’s 2 or 1 trains an hour, you would think a notice board outside station doors, instead of sat in offices drinking tea, ect, no doubt there be the first to go down with the virus, come on wise up you lot
is Morton Road open now?
Have just spoken to Island Roads and they have stated that Yaverland is definitely CLOSED to all vehicles so that they can complete their resurfacing work and will remain so until the work is complete. (Despite the disruption)
Have also confirmed with Southern Vectis that there are NO SERVICES between Brading and Sandown/Shanklin
– if you need to get from Ryde to Sandown you have to go via Newport
2pm today, I have just driven through Yavaland to Brading the Yavaland is open…
Great news – Thanks for the update.
Same just driven from Sandown high street to Yaverland, they should stop giving out wrong information
And saw the no2 bus going past meadow way
Yavaland?
Morton Common was not open at 3.45pm
Good thing I’m off work with coronavirus, no need to travel into Ryde for a fortnight
I probably gave you coroanavoirus, have a lovely two weeks off work, I have others to see that need a break…
Last time I hire an escort
What a sham. I did not know about Morton Common was closed till I got there, I thought no problem I will go Yaverland way. No chance it was closed due to road repairs. I ended up going through Apse heap, then Newchurch that way to Ryde. It was very stressful had an appointment and did not want to miss it. they are not easy to come by these days or you have to wait weeks for them.
The road signs were diabolic very and few of them.
Come on Council and Isle of Wight Roads, sort our roads out properly and stop fixing them on the cheap. The repairs and resurfacing should last more than a year. We deserve better than this.
Well Friday no one seemed to know what was open or closed, Island roads said at one point yaverland closed, next minute buses were going up there, lol, then closed it, then reopened it not long after, not very good information for the public,
