High water levels have meant that Morton Common – a main route between Brading and Sandown – has today (Friday) been closed. Island Roads say the decision has been made on safety grounds, with closures to be put in place at either end of the flooded section. Overnight the water levels on the Eastern Yar rose to such an extent that the road became impassable, resulting in this latest closure – the 2nd of the week. Motorists must now divert via Yaverland travelling to or from Sandown. Southern Vectis says that its Route 2 and 3 buses are on diversion. Buses will be diverted via Yaverland and Marshcombe Shute until further notice. It is unknown when the road is likely to reopen.

I think the council should just do away with that stretch of road at Morton, and just install a chain ferry, being that it is the main route to the Sandown, this would be a great way of increasing revenue.
Wouldn’t it be easier telling us when it isn’t flooded?
That really is a very silly comment
Can anyone from Island roads confirm that closure is absolutely the only option?
The flooding on the crown of the road is shallower so could they not just make the road one way, allowing traffic to use the middle of the road until the water level subsides and two way use is possible again?
(I have seen this used successfully in other parts of the country)
If they are worried about drivers straying from the middle, they can always put up barriers along the edges of the flooded sections to keep drivers in the middle of the road.
Yeah that would make alot of sense, but to many people ignore the road closed signs on one end. So then it would lead to even more problems. All you have to do is look at how many accidents happen on the island
Unlike the current situation they would not be able to just force their way through.
Rather, they would end up trapped head on with oncoming traffic and, shortly thereafter, points on their licence.
You might equally argue for closing all roads become some drivers exceed the speed limit.
They ignore the signs because they are put up when the road is not flooded and taken down when it is so they do not know what to believe
No fishing licence required, fill your boots…
They are taking the piss now. All they need to do is raise the height of the carriage way above the level that it floods. They keep taking our council tax, and do bugger all for us with it.
To be fair it is marshland…. it will happen get over it
We’re not talking about some cart track here.
It’s a main arterial route, an A road and the council’s responsibility to ensure that traffic flows freely – we shouldn’t have to just “get over it”.
Ok, if it’s marshland, what prick agreed for a road to be built over it?
Island Roads under another name way way way back in the day… When envelopes were ream rather than Brown!.
Meanwhile on the diversion through yaverland temporary traffic lights with no one working and a hole not on the road or pavement but on the grass outside the zoo !
This hardly ever happened years ago with the previous landowner. Since the RSPB bought the land and the lack of taking the silt out of the river we are now faced with this ever occurring problem. Many , many years ago there was the occasional flooding but not to todays levels seen.
How many times do Island roads need to be told, get the FLOOD GATES OPEN (or partially open) at Bembridge harbour.
This situation is getting so boring now, everytime theres a downpour .
I cannot understand why they close this section .Every time they close this stretch it is still passible without any problem. My little Suzuki goes through without missing a beat.
Instead of keep closing the road, island roads actually try doing something about it . That’s what us taxpayers are paying council tax for. Unbelievable
I drove through this mess this afternoon
Why the Road was open I don’t know.
Where is the District steward of Sandown, he or she should have made sure
this road was closed.
Island roads are as much use as a split condom!
Yes just what is the District Steward doing???
Several negative comments about Island Roads are not justified. Flooding caused by Environment Agency and RSPB. The Green lobby and Eco warriors of the AONB and the Biosphere are to blame. They want to re-wild the area.
You are technically correct in that it is ultimately IWCC’s responsibility to ensure that this major road remains unobstructed.
As such, it is their failure to work with the Environment Agency, the RSPB and Island Roads that deserves the criticism.
It’s not re-wilding when there has always been a bloody great Marsh and flood plain there!! Get a grip it’s only a road in two weeks time weather will have improved and you can moan about something else in your negative whinging twang.
Just higher the road through there !!
Why can’t the authorities get their act together and open the flood gate into Bembridge harbour, better still change the gate to a weir which would automatically release the excess water
The stupid thing is they put up signs road closed due to flooding when it is not flooded and take the signs down when it is flooded
Imagine being sad and lonely and the lonely friend you got is your dogs
I really is amazing, how all the know it all management and bosses, when they have to make a diversion because of what ever reason or another, they always arrange for work to be done along the diversion, and balls that up as well. It is so clever, I just can’t even begin to work out what they are thinkung, or maybe lack of it.
