Fears that a mine had been found led to Police and HM Coastguard being tasked to a beach near Brighstone earlier this evening (Saturday).
Solent Coastguard mobilised The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team at 17:11 to investigate suspected ordinance on the beach close to Grange Chine after a member of public spotted the unidentified object.
A photo of the circular ‘device’ was uploaded to social media, with concerned locals pointing the original poster to contact the Coastguard immediately on 999.
A short search was carried out in the dark but it didn’t take long for Coastguard Officers to find the suspected explosive.
After discussions with the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team at Portsmouth, it was deemed the object was not an explosive and therefore it was declared safe.
2 hours after the team were tasked to the area, they were back on station.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.

It wasn’t mine!
Nor mine!
It looks like a fossilised Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie. I don’t remember them being that hard, though.
You have thankfully not experienced my wife’s cooking. She blames the thermostat, but cold burn a salad.
It’s a rusty old casserole dish (minus one handle)
Well spotted!!
I wondered where my Chelsea bun had got to.
