A café on the outskirts of Carisbrooke has been hit with a 1-star food hygiene rating, which included a penalty for obstructing an officer.
The outcome of the October inspection of The Garden Café at Park Place Farm on Calbourne Road has only just been published but resulted in a ‘Major Improvement Necessary’ call for its owners.
The rating is being appealed said the cafe’s owner as there had been some misunderstandings. During their visit, Isle of Wight Council environmental health officers found no temperature checks were being made to confirm food, including raw meat, was being cooked to a safe temperature.
There was also no stock rotation and control system in place and some high-risk foods had been allowed a long shelf-life.
These included clotted cream, which had been open for 2 days too long, and ham, which had a 3-day use-by date but was 2 days past it. The food items were voluntarily disposed of during the visit. It was also noted by inspectors there was a risk of physical contamination, as trifles in the fridge had not been covered.
No allergen information had been completed or was available to the customer — a legal requirement for certain ingredients.
The general standard of hygiene was reasonable but there were some areas inspectors found that required detailed cleaning, in particular the inside of the microwave.
Temperature records were not available for inspection and the officer was sent from one place to another during their visit trying to find them.
A penalty was also issued for obstructing an officer in the inspection but the incident was redacted in the report, so the extent of the obstruction is unknown.
Waste from the café was being put into the domestic waste collection but commercial rubbish must be picked up by a person or organisation licensed to do so. There was also no evidence of any food hygiene training being completed.
Everything has been resolved, the owners say, and they are now hoping for a 5-star rating shortly.

And no doubt, had they not been caught, they would still be putting your health at serious risk. Vote with your feet peeps……..
I ate there not long ago and the food and service was good, place was immaculate and after being in the trade for 20 years could not find fault, having seen some 5* places and wondering how they got more than 2 i think the inspector must have been having a bad personal day
Why people vote you down I am the same as you ate there lovely it all depends if you give hygiene inspectors a brown envelope
presumably you didnt have a look around the kitchen, check how food was being stored, completion of temp logs, hygiene knowledge of staff, waste management etc etc tho
so while the meal may well have tasted nice, with good service, that is not what is being reported on here
So what your saying is when you eat out you have a look around the kitchen first hmmmm is your nose growing hmmm
sigh.. obviously not, what I said was that since this isnt done, you cannot say that the EHO report is questionable just because your own meal/ level of service was good
Agreed, some of supposedly top restaurants in Newport look awfull and pay £30/£40 for a meal that’s worse than a£6 takeaway. Wonder how many people are going to buy there Fresh Turkey from farm shops that was frozen for storage on it way here. Most food poisoning is in people’s own home.
Perhaps they should stick to selling sheds ! You cannot get food poisoning then ..
Not sure – I’ve never tried eating a shed….
Gandalf : a shed may be less life threatening to you !! If you were hungry
I WOOD try it if I were you.
Dunno. Creosote is pretty toxic.
Skanks! No excuses. They would have the rules before they opened, obviously they put profits above food safety. It really annoys me when people declare ‘It’s all resolved now’ after the fact. It’s just not good enough. There are plenty of safer alternatives to use. Steer well clear.
Stopped there once while looking for a shed.
Coffee was supposed to be a latte (and they charged the sort of price you’d expect for one) by was obviously one of those instant sachet jobbies.
What i don’t get……is why are cafes/restaurants even trying to sell sheds in the first place ?
Low fat and full of fibre
I suppose they want to shed some money.
Low quality sheds as well as low quality food.
The sociological implications of this case is fascinating. “the extent of the obstruction is unknown.” Like why was such redacted? Nobody likes environment officers, some have been bad but if anything smells guilty it’ll be that the owners was even obstructing at all. I’ve nothing to hide, come on in.
Vote with your feet and wallets …
Any place with this score should be closed . . .
Went to a cafe in cowes jkt potato.and cheese totally inedible
….
When I complained she agreed with me , but tried 2 charge me for it no way, I had 1 forkful spat it out must have been a few day’s old ….
There are place’s That should not be allowed to serve food ….
But sounds like average home fridge, dates are only recommendations,we have all been told to not waste food,if it hasn’t gone off. Milk soon will have no date. If you want to see ham that’s gone off just look at packs in most supermarket – you’ll always find a few that are grey/white and not pink but well in date. Putting businesses down like this does not help, council rightly should check, advise and ensure things are put right, but this way means they loose customers, have less income, can’t cover costs of some of needed, loose jobs, sell up and council will loose business rates so loose loose all round.
Lose, it’s lose not loose! Why does everybody write “loose” these days?
