44-year-old Charlotte Mathers has pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention and 2 other motoring offences following an early hours crash in Sandown back in December of last year.
It was just after 05:00 on 4th December that Police were called to Albert Road, Sandown when a VW Beetle – owned and registered to Mathers – ploughed into a number of parked vehicles, causing extensive damage, the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court heard this afternoon (Tuesday).
By the time officers arrived, the driver and passenger of the vehicle had already fled the scene leaving behind destruction to 5 vehicles and the VW abandoned in the middle of the road, as previously reported by Island Echo. A Subaru Impreza sustained £3,000 of damage whilst a Mini One was completely written off.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, told the court that Mathers failed to report the accident within 24 hours but later came forward to Police, stating that she was fleeing someone who had been chasing her. Mrs Smout said that in voluntary interview Mathers stated she believed an ex-partner was following her through Shanklin, Lake and into Sandown. After the crash, she then fled the scene as she feared the vehicle was going to turn up – but it didn’t.
Mathers and her new boyfriend went to a nearby hotel to seek a room and despite having mobile phones, made no effort to report the matter to Police, the court heard.
The 44-year-old, of Terrace Road in Newport, pleaded guilty to failing to stop after a road accident, failing to report an accident and driving without due care and attention.
Magistrates decided to send the case to the Isle of Wight Crown Court for sentencing as Mathers is in breach of a 4-month prison sentence, suspended for 24 months, that was issued by the Crown Court in February 2021 for the offence of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control.
The case will be heard on 9th March with Charlotte Mathers given unconditional bail until that date.

IF that`s true why is she driving and putting other lives at stake.

None of you lot was even there when my car was being followed, you wasnt dragged over the top of a glass caravan door one night by him or on board my boat when she had two massive heavy roadwork barriers slung against her Hull at 1.30am in the morning in an attempt to sink her whilst I was asleep!
It would do you people good to have a REAL PROBLEM. Pathetic….. and my car WAS INSURED.
I guess if you tell the same lies enough times you start to believe them yourself eh
