More than 90% of people using the Isle of Wight Council’s Adult Community Learning Service have gained their Maths or English qualification.
It comes after the Council invested in training and assessment to help learners pass the exams. This work has led to a massive improvement after results dipped to 56% in the previous academic year.
Councillor Paul Brading, Cabinet member for children’s services, education and skills, said:
“My congratulations to the whole leadership team and staff for this rapid turnaround of this very important service.
“Investment in literacy and numeracy is good for the Island because it makes people more employable while giving them real confidence in the workplace and in society.
“A few months ago, this service was deemed by Ofsted to need improvement.
“At the time, I said I was confident it would improve in a short space of time and this is the case. I’ve no doubt that when the next inspection comes around, a good rating or better will be achieved.”
In total, 107 people enrolled with the service in the 2017/18 academic year, with 90.7% gaining the Maths or English qualifications.
Many of those adults returned this September to study for a higher qualification.
