As first reported by Island Echo, Police were called to Sandcroft Avenue off Quarry Road at around 20:00 following reports of a disturbance in the street.
Officers responded to the scene at speed when information was received that an individual was making threats to kill whilst in possession of a knife.
It wasn’t long before the male was securely in cuffs having been arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, threats to kill and assaulting an emergency worker.
He remains in custody at Newport Police Station at this time.
No one was injured in the incident, although a woman is reported to have been left shaken.
