An Isle of Wight man cooked steaks he had stolen from Tesco on a barbecue at the beach, a court has heard.
David Marsh, 35, of Warwick Street, admitted a single count of theft from a shop when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (Tuesday).
Prosecutor Roxanne Cole told the court that on 10th October last year, Marsh entered Tesco in Freshwater and concealed several steaks in his jacket.
The 35-year-old then picked up a crate of beer and went to the till to pay; however, he didn’t remove the steaks from his coat and instead left the store having only paid for the beer.
Marsh – who was last in court back in April 2022 – was later identified and Police informed.
Defending Marsh, Michael McGoldrick told the court that his client was homeless at the time of the offending and that he had run out of money.
Marsh was fined £80 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and £72.61.

Being fines are being paid with benefit money
it is not really punishment
It’s another case of “every little helps”
