The busy main road between Shanklin and Ventnor is to be closed for around 12 days from Monday to allow for footway repairs.
Between 13th February and 3rd March, Leeson road will be closed between its junction with St Boniface Road and Bonchurch Shute so that Island Roads can undertake necessary footway repairs.
Works will begin with preparatory works including kerbing and excavation with the 2nd stage focusing solely on the resurfacing of the footways.
As a result of the closure, Southern Vectis Route 3 buses will be unable to serve the area, whilst vehicular access for residents will be limited. It’s thought that local traffic may be able to use Bonchurch as a diversion.
The road will be closed around the clock for the duration of the works.

so for half term week that’s now the main road between Ventnor and Shanklin, Lake Hill and Perowne Way, Brading (Yarbridge Junction), Brading High Street (granted it’s overnight) and half of Ryde! That’s without any emergency works anywhere…

I would have thought half term would be better as less disruption to school buses and school runs. I suppose you cant please everyone.

So why couldn’t IR have joined in and started then or were they too busy putting temporary lights up all over the island. Not the brightest of a company unless they get paid for each set of lights they put up
Don’t forget the Watery Lane 4-way temporary lights on the way to Newchurch, and there’s nothing being being worked on by our friend WightFibre. Grrrr.
Use alternative form of transportation. Any system should have a plan B, and C as well. Trains, cycle paths and so on, and then leave roads only for those who truly need them. Specially on such a small island it would be really bad to make ourselves depend on one form of transport, I’m sure public demanded balanced approach with multiple options in the past 🙂
Haven’t Island Roads heard of traffic lights after all that is quite a wide two way road?
This whim of closing roads has got to stop. It cannot take the whole of the road to do the majority of these repairs. Surely all the lorries and most of the kit can be got off the road in most cases. What’s wrong with traffic lights ? Or are we still working to EU Regs ?
I’m all for keeping the men safe but it’s getting ridiculous.
I will be sending my drone up to see how many kids are actually working and how much of the road is full of equipment to justify closing a two lane road
If it’s up to the usual standard it will be a couple doing the work from one end to the other and numerous managers in new vans inspecting now and again.
Any chance they can start at both ends and a bonus for the team that gets to the middle first?
I couldn’t agree more.What about the fiasco in Binstead.Today they were working way off the road yet traffic lights were in place causing huge tailbacks.It’s about time they repaired the roads-many in a disgraceful state and left pavements which were not in need of repair.Councillors are useless-won’t even reply to e-mails.
Ok, if this is footway repairs, meaning the pavement, why does the whole of the road have to shut? This is the one of the main routes in and out of the town.
At worst this should be one side of the road closed or even do the work at night when the road could be closed without so much disruption.
It seems like there’s absolutely no control over Island Roads (or Wight Fibre for that matter) and the disruption they can cause. Everywhere you go now on the Island it seems like there’s road works and temporary lights.
Yes, we need to keep the roads in a decent condition, but shutting the entire road just to repair the pavement makes no sense at all.
Please, Island Roads and Wight Fibre, use some common sense.
