A lorry has struck a railway bridge in Sandown this afternoon (Thursday) causing travel disruption in the area including to Island line trains.
The mainland-based vehicle has travelled along Avenue Road and collided with the bridge at the junction with Perowne Way and Morton Common.
Island Line trains are suspended between Ryde and Shanklin until safety inspections can be carried out.
The incident happened shortly before 14:00.
UPDATE @ 14:45 – The lorry belonging to Double Time Distribution has been moved, allowing the road to fully re-open.
The trailer has sustained noticeable damage as a result of colliding with the bridge due to being over the height restriction.
Staff from Network Rail are now assessing the bridge structure to see if trains can resume.
UPDATE @ 16:55 – Island Line services have now resumed.
How many times has this happened? Professional drivers should know the height of the vehicle, they can certainly see the bridge.
They are trained to drive to a certain standard, they clearly are not driving to the standard expected!

If this vehicle is from the mainland? Then how did it get on the ferry if it is overheight? We all know there is a tight squeeze on this bridge, but I would have hardly described it as ‘low’ if a standard bus can pass with ease.
It’s not overheight for the road network, this bridge has a height restriction. I think Southern Vectis use ‘low height’ buses.

Island buses are NOT standard. They are 13,8 not 14,6 .A London Transport Routemaster will not go under that bridge.
RF ferries are at least 16 feet high (motorway bridge height) dont know about the WL ones though

There should be a sign / marker in the cab telling how high the vehicle is, if the trailer is changed for different height one then it should be adjusted to suit.

Perhaps the height marker on the bridge is wrong. A George Jenkins truck hit it just after the road was resurfaced. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was incorrect on the island.
Can sensors be placed before vehicles reach the bridge triggering a stop sign? Speed cameras work well enough.
But that would cost money. You have to think of the UK oligarchs. One had a birthday yesterday, we should pay for that first before something that will help us plebs.
Perhaps a girder either side of the bridge at the same height or marginally lower so they hit that rather than the bridge?
