Neighbours are objecting to plans for a new independent crematorium in Newchurch, with the main concern being the impact on traffic.
Siting an increased demand, William Hall Funeral Directors are seeking permission to install crematorium facilities in a new service building at its Sunny Brow base on Winford Road, as previously reported by Island Echo.
The new building would also be larger to carry out services at the site, seating up to 150 people at a time.
One supporter of the project said a new crematorium was long overdue, with the Island being ‘subjected’ to the one in Whippingham which had always put them off the idea of being cremated.
Environmental Health had no objections to the application regarding odour and air quality as the crematorium will be required to operate under an environmental permit. It did request further information on noise levels but said modern crematoria plants are typically designed to operate at low noise levels due to the sensitive nature of the site.
Newchurch Parish Council is also supporting the development.
However, some residents said it would damage the character and appearance of the local landscape, ‘destroying’ the current quality of life they have, with a potentially detrimental effect on property values.
One objector said the increased traffic would be totally unacceptable on the main Winford Road through to Newchurch, as drivers already ignore the speed restrictions and a slow-moving funeral procession would only increase the dangers – even though the limit was decreased from 60mph to 30mph recently.
Another objector said the crematorium was not needed — a fact disputed in planning documents — but the impact of residents nearby would be immense, not just with pollution from increased vehicle movements but any potential emissions from the crematorium.
Several residents questioned why the current council-run crematorium in Whippingham could not be extended instead.
The consultation period is now over but the Isle of Wight Council is yet to make the final decision.

…………
No, they just don’t want dead people being burned in their backyards and the potential for the smell.
As no-one would UNLESS making money from such.
I imagine most of us have had the sad experience of attending a service at the Crem, and to me, the place ‘lacks’ the feeling felt in a Church, despite most not being as religious as people once were.
To me, it would be nice if a more tranquil country setting were found, with a church close by to provide the ambiance if not the religion for those attending.
This site seems ‘only’ chosen because the land is already owned by the intended directors of the proposed new crem.
More fiscally prudent that practical perhaps?
not all of us are religious, therefore having a crem without a church is the correct move for the 21st century
none of us should have christianity or any other religion rammed down our throats at every turn – fed up with this. If people wish to go believe in some invisible being, crack on, but where there are places that all of us go to, regardless of any beliefs, then those places should be devoid of any visible bias towards any religion,as it will cause further distress to those of us who do not follow that religion or do not follow any at all.
Most who choose to get married in a church now are very unlikely to be religious, often anything but, yet still choose to do so, for the feeling, the tradition.
Same with Christmas, still choose to celebrate such, yet having some geeky kids blasting opponents sat in front of a brand new X box, with parents drunk, or doing a line, is hardly what all would have been ‘expected’ to be the most apt way to celebrate Jesus’ Birthday.
So those who choose not to have a religious ceremony can just see it as sat in an attractive historical, traditional building, rather than another characterless, production line, when saying their goodbyes for the very last time.
The old Crem will still be there for those who prefer the modern alternative, where the young, who sometimes use such occasions as more competitive way to ‘dress up’ can be in ‘spoons’ with phones back on, to get wasted within a few minutes thus allowing the more traditional mourners to embrace the older, more respectful traditions.
All about choice.
you use the word traditional – that is not what we want anymore, this is the 21st Century and we have the right not to have religion rammed down our throats anywhere. Mourners can mourn anywhere – the crem part does not need to have christianity or any other religion imposing itself anywhere.
traditional – you mean the forced imposition of christianity many years ago in the country, whereby any dissent was met with cruel execution and as such, those churches still exist today – no, they need removing.
Does you ‘view’ extend to other non mentionable ‘faiths’? I wonder, and if they do, could you get away with ‘saying such and still expect to find the window in the store when you go to buy your electric toaster the next day?
As I said, the old crem is still there, and nice and near Mc D’s, and Spoons, for the young who are creating this ‘wonderful’ new world, which has ‘never’ been better………….has it?
yes – it applies to all religions
each generation that moves into the realm of being “in charge of society” changes what it didn’t like about the previous generation that ran things. Has been happening forever.
old pots – I do not have “a people”
i am one person, who just happens to have an abode on this piece of land. I do not consider myself as part of some commune or country and have lived in various different parts of this planet over the years. As soon as i get bored of living here, i will move somewhere else again.
so, if the place gets overrun with undesirables, spongers, beggars, layabouts and any other deadbeat that moves here or was born here, i will just up sticks and leave, as I have done from other places.
if the people that live here, choose to have some liberal lefty policies of letting everyone in and letting them all sponge off the state, it won’t be my problem, i won’t be living here.
and before you say it….i have financed all moves and my costs out of my own pocket, everywhere i have lived.
“allowing in all those who were once only here if shackled.”
No-one was allowed in if shackled. People were abducted from their homes, shackled, and brought here and to America and forced into slavery and servitude.
Withdraw your racist comment.
before you fall apart over various versions of history, just remember one thing…
if everything had not have happened the way it did, good or bad, you would not be living in the world you are living in now. think about that before crying about things you were not directly involved in and no one alive today was involved in.
you are just another pathetic apologist for the actions of other individuals who are a long time dead.

What a stupid stupid idea!! on a road with NO pavements, a lane really, very narrow and the local Council back it!! – I wonder why? money is to be made from death that is for sure but common sense has gone out the window on this one, and no I do not live there I just cannot believe this scheme.
Nimby
Excellent idea, hope the IWCC approve the plans
