Police, HM Coastguard, WightSAR and Cowes RNLI are searching the Newport area for a vulnerable man who has gone missing from St Mary’s Hospital.
A large-scale air, land and sea search is progressing at the centre of the Island this morning (Saturday) in the hunt for a male with mental health issues.
2 Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge and Ventnor, Cowes RNLI lifeboat and a Police helicopter have joined Police officers on the banks of the River Medina in a bid to locate the local man. WightSAR volunteers have also been deployed.
Island Echo is told that concerns were raised for the welfare of the individual when he left the hospital site at around 22:30.
The search continues more than 3 hours after the alarm was raised.
UPDATE @ 06:55 – The search was brought to an end shortly after 04:00 this morning, with nothing located.
The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team were also tasked to assist with colleagues from Bembridge and Ventnor.
The individual – a 56-year-old man from Newport – has since been found safe and well elsewhere, thought to be at home.

Classic island policing… 6 and a half hours later…. hmm maybe we should check his home address now…
The police did everything and yes they checked his home more than once dont be so judgemental they done all they could to try and find him
Done all they could to find him? If that’s the case then they would have found him sooner than 6 and a half hours
