Organisers of the Isle of Wight Grand National and Scurry have announced the event will return this October – some 31 months after the last races were held.
The annual event was due to take place in March 2020 but was postponed until September due to a waterlogged field. As it happens, the coronavirus pandemic hit later that month and would have forced the cancellation of the event anyway – and it also put paid to hopes of racing action in September.
With the pandemic continuing throughout 2020 and into 2021, the horse racing event hasn’t taken place since March 2019 but there are now genuine hopes of racing returning to Ashey on Sunday 10th October 2021.
The IW Grand National and Scurry is often hampered by poor weather conditions with events cancelled in 2013, 2016 and 2018 – with 2020 also cancelled due to the pandemic. As a result, the event has unintentionally been bi-annual since 2015.
A schedule will be released in the next few weeks say organisers, who will be hoping to see crowds gathered at West Ashey Farm for a day full of competitive amateur racing.
