Alec Penstone, one of the Isle of Wight’s last surviving Second World War veterans and a much-loved figure across the Island and beyond, has sadly died aged 101 following a short illness.
Alec was best known for his extraordinary wartime service, taking part in 10-and-a-half Arctic Convoys during World War Two – some of the most dangerous missions of the conflict. He also served during the Normandy campaign and remained dedicated to preserving the memory of those who fought alongside him.
Born in London in 1925, Alec joined the Royal Navy during the Second World War and later dedicated much of his life to sharing stories of the conflict and honouring the sacrifices made by his generation.
In recent years he became a familiar and respected face at remembrance events on the Isle of Wight, where his warmth, humour and remarkable life story touched countless people.
Alec, who recently celebrated his 101st birthday in hospital, had received hundreds of birthday cards and messages of support after an appeal was launched to help lift his spirits during ill health.
He died earlier this afternoon (Thursday).

Will always remember Alec for his poppy stalls across the island. A truly lovely bloke.
His passing, along with that of Flight Lieutenant George Dunn from Saltdean is a grim reminder of the sacrifices made by a generation who secured the freedom of scum like Hilary Benn and his Liebore chums, who would have veterans prosecuted for “war crimes”, whilst flooding the UK with terrorists.
