Residents across the Isle of Wight are being encouraged to take part in a new initiative aimed at shaping the future of local community food growing.
The Community Growing Survey is a joint scheme developed by the Isle of Wight Food Partnership, Isle of Wight Council and the IW Biosphere Steering Committee.
The survey seeks to map existing growing spaces across the Isle of Wight, assess capacity and needs, and connect individuals and groups interested in collaborative growing projects, learning opportunities and joint initiatives.
It is open to everyone, including those involved in community gardens, allotments, local businesses, parish councils or individuals with a general interest in food growing.
Organisers are particularly keen to hear from people who are not currently involved in growing food but would like to be – especially those with land available.
The survey is open until Sunday (5th January 2026). After it closes, a meeting will be held to present the findings and agree on practical next steps for the year ahead, including the development of collaborative plans.
The initiative follows strong interest shown at the Environment and Sustainability Forum to explore opportunities for knowledge-sharing and joint funding bids.
Katy Hurd, Environment and Biosphere Community Coordinator at the Isle of Wight Council, has said:
“We were thrilled to see such enthusiasm from our Island residents with regard to community growing and look forward to building a stronger, more resilient local food system together, based on the findings of this survey.”
Feedback from the survey will inform long-term efforts to support a more sustainable and connected local food network.
