The Isle of Wight Photographic Society is celebrating its 80th anniversary during the 2025-2026 season, marking 8 decades of commitment to the art and craft of photography on the Isle of Wight.
Founded in 1945, the Isle of Wight Photographic Society is the oldest photographic club on the Isle of Wight. While some evidence suggests its roots may extend back to the late 19th century, its formal establishment following the Second World War has cemented its long-standing role within the Island’s creative community.
To commemorate the milestone, the Society is embracing the traditional 80th anniversary symbol of oak, a tree associated with strength, endurance and longevity. In recognition of this, members will take part in a themed photography competition inspired by the concept of oak.
The anniversary celebrations will culminate in a public exhibition in December, which will be held at Ryde Library.
The exhibition is intended to reflect both the symbolism of oak and the Society’s resilience and continued relevance over the past eight decades.
The Isle of Wight Photographic Society continues to provide a focal point for photographers of all abilities, encouraging creativity, skill development and a shared passion for photography.
