The Isle of Wight football team may miss out on playing at the Orkney Island Games in July 2025.
This is because games organisers have reduced the number of teams from 16 to 12 in both the men’s and women’s events due to a lack of spare beds on the northern Scottish archipelago.
Last year’s Guernsey Island Games limited the men’s competition to 16 teams, with Alderney (one of the Channel Islands), Hitra (Norway) and the Scottish Western Isles all missing out, although the Western Isles were later accepted into the competition after another island dropped out.
Up to 6 teams will be given automatic entry. Champions Jersey are guaranteed a place at Orkney 2025, as are Alderney and Hitra, who were denied places last year and are consequently guaranteed places next summer. Orkney, as hosts, and Jersey, as reigning champions, are also assured of spots, as are the Faroe Islands, hosts in 2027.
