A group of dedicated gymnasts from the Isle of Wight are celebrating recent competition success after making the move to Portsmouth Gymnastics Club (PGC) last year, following the decision by their previous club to step away from competitive gymnastics.
Now training under the name Wight Gymnasts Xcel/PGC, the girls have taken on the demanding challenge of travelling to the mainland up to 3 times a week for training sessions.
Among the team, 17-year-old Lucy Collins has been named Club Captain, a role that reflects not only her dedication to the sport but also her leadership in supporting fellow gymnasts during travel and training. Lucy, affectionately referred to as “the leader of the posse” by her coaches, ensures the squad makes the journey to training safely and consistently.
Teammate Alesha has also been recognised for her progress and commitment, receiving the ‘Most Improved Gymnast’ award during the club’s annual awards evening earlier this year.
Recent competition results highlight the girls’ hard work and determination. Lucy’s performance has stood out at both county and regional levels:
At the Hampshire Grades (9th March) in the Performance 3 category, Lucy achieved:
- 1st on Vault
- 3rd on Bars
- 3rd on Beam
- 3rd in Range and Conditioning (R&C)
- 6th on Floor
- 4th Overall
A week later at the South Region Grades (16th March), also in Performance 3, she earned:
- 1st on Beam
- 1st on Floor
- 6th on Vault
- 6th on Bars
- 5th Overall
This impressive regional performance has earned Lucy a place at the National Finals, which will be held on the weekend of 24th-25th May in Stoke-on-Trent.
The results are a testament to the girls’ commitment and the strength of their new partnership with Portsmouth Gymnastics Club.
Well done, obviously better facilities in Pompey.
