The Isle of Wight Council is asking for your views on a proposal to reduce the opening times of Lord Louis Library in Newport, from 6 days a week, to 5.
It’s proposed that the library will be closed on Wednesday, as this is the day with the fewest visitors. The move is expected to save £25,000 a year, but also means that the library will be available for other community activities.
The consultation comes following the Full Council decision last February to reduce the library service budget.
Councillor Jonathan Bacon, Cabinet lead for environment, heritage and waste, said:
“This survey is very important in deciding the future of our library services. I would urge as many users as possible to respond to make sure we have your feedback on this proposal.
“We have to make the most of limited resources available to us as well as making sure we meet the needs of our users so we really want to hear from our residents.”
The consultation runs until midnight on Friday 11th February 2022. To fill in the Lord Louis Library survey, visit https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/LordLouisLibrarySurvey2021.
There are also paper copies available at all Council. libraries.
So library will soon not be open on Saturdays, the decision already made and regardless of what people say the IWC will manipulate the outcome. How many times we have consultation and never what public want.
So if this happens ie a cut in services, how’s about a cut in council tax for once. In all the years it’s been in place I’ve never known it to be reduced or held at the same rate. Gone are the days when I can remember paying rates which included water for the year and it amounted to just over £100
and what about cutting this webb site
I’ve got an even better way the council can save money. Close County Hall.
The move is expected to save £25,000 a year – which will be spent on immigrants, benefit claimants and council salaries
The end is neigh for all library’s. Closing it a day next year will be the start of the end.
Save even more money. Reduce number of senior council employees.
That’s great, cut another lifeline to the many that access this service. Will the IWC be sending out paper surveys to those who don’t access the Internet as the majority of people are in the age range that need the library as they don’t access online services. Saturdays are valuable. The library is valuable – leave it alone.

It is all ready decided. This decision will most likely have been made last year.
What all so puzzle’s me is they only open when people are at work and close before working people finish the day’s work yet we still get charged for this unusable service.
dont we have a say after all its our money
It’s worth going back and reading some of the comments from May when the new Council was elected. All the euphoria and bashing of the previous Council and yet, here we are with the same old story once again. Yet more cuts to public services and we’ve already had the dodgy planning approvals and ignoring of the public’s views and objections. It seems like no matter what colours the Councillors fly under or what groups they form they’re all the same when they get into office. And people were asking after the local election why the turnout was so low? Simply because it seems that no matter who you vote for you get the same result.
thats the start another one bites the dust ,Council dont mind wasting 3/4 million on a webb site just to make there jobs easier and quicker
