Island residents are being encouraged to use NHS 111 online and local pharmacies for urgent but non-life-threatening medical needs over the busy Bank Holiday weekend.
NHS 111 online is a fast and easy-to-use alternative to calling the NHS 111 phone service, helping people aged 5 and over assess symptoms, get advice, and be directed to the right care – all without waiting on the line.
The service is available 24/7 at www.111.nhs.uk and through the NHS App. It can offer help with a wide range of issues, including minor injuries, mental health concerns, dental pain, and urgent medication needs – particularly useful when GP surgeries are closed.
Lee Haward, Head of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service Clinical Coordination Centre, has said:
“If you’ve got access to the internet, NHS 111 online is a really quick and easy way to get help. It works just like calling 111, but you can do it all online, anytime, day or night. Just go to the NHS 111 website or use the NHS App, answer a few questions about how you’re feeling, and it will guide you to the right care. It’s really easy to use and there when you need help.”
Local pharmacies are also available to offer expert help with minor conditions through the Pharmacy First scheme. Many Island pharmacies can now treat issues such as sinusitis, sore throat, earache, infected insect bites, impetigo, shingles and uncomplicated urinary tract infections (in women).
Pharmacists are qualified healthcare professionals who can give advice, reassurance, and treatment without the need for a GP appointment. Many pharmacies will remain open over the bank holiday, and details can be found online.
To access NHS 111, visit www.111.nhs.uk, use the NHS App, or call 111.
Life was so much better and safer pre 111.
