Islanders joined in on some great sporting fun yesterday (Sunday) as the Sainsbury’s-sponsored Sport Relief Mile got underway at Seaclose Park in Newport.
Hundreds of runners gathered for the event, which saw locals take on the mile challenge on the outskirts of Newport in aid of the national campaign that raises much needed funds for projects both in the UK and in Africa. Some took part in fancy dress.
It wasn’t just about the mile run this weekend though, as members of staff at Sainsbury’s in Newport took part in a flashmob, dancing in the centre aisle to the Black Lace “Superman” Song that was adapted to activities that were acted out such as swimming, cycling, dancing, moonwalking and drinking.
That wasn’t the only charity event for the Newport team, as they carried out a trolley dash with staff members Aly and Aimee rushing around the store to find products in record timing. Funds from this were raised by doing a sweepstake and colleagues having to guess how long it took them to find all 10 products and the large Banana.
Team members Craig Proud, Tanya Blake and Adam Whale also took part in the Sport Relief Mile (pictured above).
The ‘118 boys’ of Store Manager Paul Dyer and Neil Mason carried out a cycleathon in the store’s foyer alongside other members of staff, who paid £1 each to carry out a mile on the cycle machines clocking up a total of 200 miles. This was all possible thanks to the support of Steve from SpinZone in Newport that allowed the use of the exercise Bikes for the weekend.
