Newport man Paul Lewin is preparing to take on a gruelling 67-mile coastal walk around the Isle of Wight while surviving primarily on foraged food, all in aid of Dementia UK.
The challenge, set to begin on 3rd May, will see Paul walk the entire Isle of Wight coastal path over 5 days, carrying essential gear while navigating varied terrain and unpredictable weather conditions.
Paul’s route will take him from Newport Quay along the cycle track towards East Cowes following the coastal path clockwise around the Island, to finish (hopefully) at The Bargemans Rest in Newport with a well-earned pint.
Adding to the difficulty, he plans to rely largely on food he can forage along the coastline, significantly limiting his calorie intake during the journey.
Starting from what he describes as a relatively low level of fitness, the challenge is expected to push both his physical endurance and mental resilience.
Paul is undertaking the effort to raise funds and awareness for Dementia UK, a charity that provides specialist Admiral Nurses to support families affected by dementia.
Ahead of the challenge, Paul has said:
“Dementia impacts so many people, not just those diagnosed but their families as well.
“I wanted to take on something genuinely difficult that pushes me out of my comfort zone, while raising money for a cause that provides real, practical support to people going through incredibly tough situations.”
Throughout the 5-day challenge, Paul will document his journey, with plans to release a documentary on YouTube showcasing both the physical demands of the walk and the realities of sustaining himself through foraging.
Donations can be made via his GoFundMe page, with all proceeds going to Dementia UK to support its work.
