Recorded fly-tipping incidents on the Isle of Wight have increased to more than 900 in the last year, new figures reveal.
Latest figures from the Isle of Wight Council saw a 7.6% increase in illegal dumping between April 2022 and March 2023, to 920 incidents. It compares to 749 incidents in 2020-21 and 855 in 2021-22, but the authority still says it has 1 of the lowest rates of fly-tipping in the South East, according to Defra.
Back in February, Island Echo reported how fly-tipping had increased by 48.6% in just 2 years…
The Council introduced a fly-tipping and litter task force a couple of years ago, which made several recommendations the council has actioned, including making it simpler for people to report littering via a new online form.
The authority has started to crack down on the incidents with 13 fixed penalty notices issued and paid in the last year, 14 warning letters sent, 51 investigations and 78 actions taken. This is an improvement on previous years when no fines were issued.
The increase in incidents, the authority has said, can be put down to several factors, with a big issue being fly-tipping in towns, not necessarily in the countryside. This includes black bags left outside properties after collection time which happened 324 times. The spokesperson said black bags or litter collected by picking groups are often reported as fly tips which further skews the figures.
The local authority hasn’t blamed itself though for introducing the strict regime at Lynbottom and Afton Marsh during COVID, which it has continued to this day. This requires visitors to book trips in advance.
Another success of the task force, the Council has said, is that the process to report a fly-tip has been streamlined, reducing duplications and leading to a review on how highway fly-tips are investigated and partnerships which could reduce incidents. It is currently looking at activist and enforcement interventions; tackling littering on council land; the arrangements of litter bins (numbers, locations and collections); monitoring and surveillance of hot spots.
The incidents include 754 on highways, 141 on council land and 19 on footpaths. Of the waste, 21 were animal carcasses; 36 vehicle parts; 23 white goods; 2 asbestos lots; 4 clinical; 26 construction; demolition and excavation; and 2 chemical drums of oil or fuels.

The incidents of flytipping increasing could not possibly due to the introduction of charges for all waste that is classed as commercial , no matter how small the quantity, if you make multiple trips to the tip.
Well it’s so difficult to take stuff to the top now can you blame people??? The IWC haven’t got a clue have they?
How is it ‘so difficult’ to book a slot at the tip?
What part of the process do you struggle with?
“Well it’s so difficult to take stuff to the top now”.. is it??
reckon you must be really ‘challenged’ if you find it difficult…
It’s ok for non working and retired, but most of us don’t plan in advance,we just decide load up car and go. Reasons for booking is set up purely to limit amount dumped in a day so as to reduce cost to them. What I never fig out is why a member of public can dump fridge for nothing if have own transport, but if I don’t or too poor then will cost me £100 for man and van to take?.Why don’t they just make everyone pay eg £5?. And how come I can dump car to tyres for free – hardly house hold waste .
We also need longer opening hours in summer to accommodate working people.
Maybe some persons cannot afford to take items to the tip due to the price of fuel.
Might be a good idea if IW Council offered a FREE collection service or placed tips in
various parts of the Island for people to use.
Everyone’s a winner that way.
LET’S FACE IT THE COUNCIL RAKES IN MILLIONS OF POUNDS FROM COUNCIL TAXES AND
PARKING CHARGES.
WHO ELSE IN THE UK CHARGES 24/7 365 DAYS A YEAR PARKING CHARGES?
EVEN KHAN AIN’T THAT BAD AND HE’S A GREEDY B’*TARD
Didn’t Kirk kill him?
Not yet. That happens in the future. Get your timelines straight.
A lot of Scotland has 24 hour parking wardens and why are you shouting?
On the mainland many places do not charge for green waste to be taken away,
those that do only charge £55 a year.
Even though IW Council charge one of the most expensive Council Taxes in England
They charge over double for their green waste to be collected.
I have friends who live in flats on the mainland and their rubbish just goes in a bin
shute, they don’t have to sort their rubbish into various piles.
On the Island all the rubbish goes on the same heap anyway.
It’s all a con
To be fair the booking system is so easy and does away with the massive queues outside the tip during peak times I don’t see that as a reason for fly tipping, charging for commercial waste and pure laziness are the reasons
It’s mostly commercial fly tipping.
While getting rid of your domestic waste is easy and free (or, rather, included in your council tax), dumping commercial waste, particularly certain building waste, is expensive.
The vast majority of fly tipping is coming out of the backs of vans, not cars.
The prices builders charge they should be able to afford the tipping charges.
I would love to know what they dump in the foundations of new builds.
I have heard some stories it would make your blood boil
There ain’t many genuine honest builders out there, believe me.
Lol
Probably caused by “make a quick buck” man with van who only excepts cash to take the rubbish away. Then of course doesn’t declare his income to HMRC.
Don’t know what they are grizzling about. Some low life has fly tipped thousands of pounds worth of PPE paid with our taxes on land at Calmore, near New Forest. I wonder what corrupt MP was given this contract.
I blame the WEF. Seems the most likely cause. Global business moguls and world leaders love a bit of fly tipping. They get off on it.
well it is the isle of Wight in which is a dump anyway
Just do what I do dump it anywhere neighbour garden better
