An Isle of Wight athlete has helped the GB Women’s Flag Football Team reach the semi-finals of the Olympic division at the world’s largest tournament.
GB Women edge closer to LA 2028 with Island star in ranks after an impressive showing at the Tampa World Championship in the United States.
Lottie Ladler, who is supported through the Isle of Wight Council’s Talented Athlete scheme and by cross-Solent operator Wightlink, travelled to the United States for an intensive programme of training and competition.
The squad’s tour began with a training camp at Warner University in Florida, where they also played friendly fixtures against the university side and China’s national flag football team.
They then competed in the Tampa World Championship – regarded as the largest flag football tournament in the world – attracting teams from across the globe.
The GB team produced its strongest display in the Olympic division, progressing to the semi-finals before being knocked out by an experienced Canadian side. The tournament was eventually won by the USA national team.
The Florida trip marks the start of a pivotal year for the GB Women’s Flag Football Team, with preparations under way for the Flag Football World Championships in Germany later this year. Results there will contribute vital ranking points towards qualification for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where only the world’s top six teams will secure a place.
Reflecting on the experience, Lottie said:
“It was an amazing experience to play in Florida. The level of competition made it an excellent opportunity for the team.
“Starting our World Championship year with that kind of exposure allows us to learn and grow before perfecting our game ready for August.
“I’d like to say thank you to Wightlink for helping me travel to trips like this.”
Wightlink supports Lottie’s travel as part of its wider commitment to helping the Isle of Wight’s most gifted and talented athletes through the council’s Talented Athlete scheme.
Sam Woodman, Partnerships Marketing Manager at Wightlink, said:
“It’s fantastic to see Lottie representing Great Britain on such a big stage.
“The commitment it takes to compete at this level is huge and we’re really pleased to be able to play a small part in helping her get there.
“She’s a great example of the talent coming out of the Isle of Wight and we’re proud to help Island athletes access opportunities beyond the Island.”
The GB Women’s Flag Football Team will now turn its focus to the World Championships later this year as it continues its pursuit of Olympic qualification.
