Subzero temperatures overnight have caused icy conditions on the Island Roads this morning (Wednesday), which have lead to a number of crashes.
It’s reported that 3 vehicles have been involved in a collision on sheet ice at Alverstone Road in Whippingham.
A crash has also occurred on the main Godshill to Shanklin road near Sandford, at the junction with Red Hill Lane.
Motorists should avoid side roads and country lanes, sticking to main A roads between towns.
UPDATE @ 08:57 – A 3rd incident has occurred on Staplers Road on the outskirts of Newport, close to Monkey Haven. Ice is known to be present on a bend just before the road turn into Whiterails Road.

Why would I come to a stop with somebody parking on the pavement? I don’t drive along the pavement, I’m on the road. I might have to stop if they had parked there!
I know the people who live there and they’re a hard-working lovely family! Not on benefits & own their own home.It’s absolutely ridiculous that you post on a newspaper article about icy roads to moan & target hate and abuse at a particular family who have a few vehicles to park- Go Say it to his face! You have no idea how difficult it is to park on Great Preston Road, especially when you’re trying to keep an eye on your own vehicle that you have to pay for! I have cctv installed to protect my car because some of the chavvies cannot park and damage cars so try to stay near my own home although some take issue with it — it’s usually people who don’t have to fork out excess on car insurance because some inbred muppet scraped it
Perhaps just perhaps that double lines will melt the ice well in Steve’s mind anyway away with the fairy’s come to mind
Absolutely nothing, but quite a few people have an issue with that road and are taking every opportunity to make a point.
How will that help? If you can’t pass a parked car on a wide road, you shouldn’t be driving!
Try passing in a Mobility Scooter on the pavement, it’s not easy

We moved to the Island from Pompey a few years ago.
At Eastney Double Red Lines were placed.
it became a nightmare but it did prevent parking issues long term.
also a nice revenue pleaser for Pompey Council.

The Family who live in the Council House at Number 90 Great Preston Rd
They think they can Park where they want.
They leave a yellow car on the pavement 24/7

This is a constant issue and not only with white van man! if you dare to drive to the conditions whether it be a cyclist in front, ice, or driving to the speed limit you can almost guarantee it will happen, I am afraid these people cannot be educated and unless there are more police around to deter such behaviour it will not change, let’s be honest the penalties for poor driving are no deterrent anyway, how many times do you hear/read of the amount of points on those brought to court already or those already banned caught driving? Far to many.
Your right, however, it’s an island thing, you will never educate them, they are mostly out of their sad little heads drugged up….
I have lived on the mainland in the past, I can assure you this exists there as well, having been associated with the Island since the 80’s what I have noticed is Island driving standards have lowered considerably, dare I say down to mainland standards.
The Island has always been classed as 50 years behind the mainland so eventually the Island driving has gone down in time to mainland standards. If you don’t travel to the mainland to often or never in some cases you will class it as Island standards as you have nothing to compare it to. With more traffic on the Island and no improvement in roads infrastructure the problem will only get worse. Drugs/alcohol/impatience/young/older drivers, all plays a part on both sides of the Solent.
I’ve experienced van man this morning driving like idiots, they are a bloody pain in the arse….Give them a banana and maybe they will show a little respect to others..
Would love to stick to the A roads but Morton Common is still closed for the third day now and the Yaverland route is basically a car park so not a hope.
Would take the bus but they’re having a worse time of it than me. But at least they’re not having to go on a massive diversion over the downs and back today (yet…)
I spoke too soon – They’re back to taking the scenic route again. (Not really surprising since I saw 5 or more of them all stuck in the Yaverland mess earlier)
We drove past the Monkey Haven and noticed the ice, fine at 25-30mph but unfortunately still people driving at 50+ and overtaking cyclists on corners. Stay safe everyone!

So many idiotic drivers on this island. Is it any wonder so many accidents occur.
Why do people think they can drive as normal in these conditions? You drive in accordance with the conditions.
If ice is known to be present at a certain location why hasn’t the Council put some proper grit down. Even if that means someone having to get out of a vehicle. !!!
The stuff they’re spreading obviously isn’t adequate.
I’ll say it again, though I doubt anyone will take any notice, where icy patches are identified the Council needs to get some real grit down.
