Bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion in a residential area of Cowes last night (Wednesday) after a piece of historic ordnance was found.
Police were alerted to the discovery off of Arctic Road at 13:50 in the afternoon.
A 100m exclusion zone was established and photographs were sent off to the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Team for assessment.
An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Portsmouth travelled across the Solent via the Wightlink ferry to Fishbourne at 19:00, arriving in Cowes on blue lights and sirens by 20:20.
Just 30 minutes after arriving on scene, a loud bang echoed out on both sides of the River Medina as a controlled explosion was carried out.
Missed opportunity. Should have put it on floaty, towed it out to sea and bang. Two in one.
What was the piece of historic ordnance then ?
They never seem to explain what these things are !. It would be interesting and informative. It surly can’t be a secret unless perhaps someone is going to be charged for hoarding something dangerous
It was an unused firework from last year.
