A yellow weather warning for heavy rain and severe gales has been issued for the Isle of Wight.
IW Met Service says that a small but strong area of low pressure will sit close to the south of the UK bringing some very heavy spells of rain along with strong and gusty winds on Friday.
The end of the working week will see spells of rain moving up from the south with 20-30mm of rain possible in some places. Easterly winds will also increase with exposed coastal areas of eastern and southern parts of the Island seeing gusts up to 60-65mph.
60mph winds at this time of year aren’t too unusual but the direction is what will cause the problems combined with the rain. This means that places that are usually sheltered from the normal southwesterly gales may take the full brunt of the wind leading to the risk of falling tree debris and potentially even a few downed trees, especially along eastern and southern coastal areas.
Surface water and spray will be an additional hazard along with localised flooding in the usual prone areas.
Saturday and beyond will see further spells of very heavy rain, once again potentially leading to some localised flooding. A further 20-30mm could fall throughout this period although exactly amounts are uncertain at this time. Further updates will be available from www.iwmetservice.co.uk.
Travel and transport disruptions are likely, including to cross-Solent travel.
