Gritters will be out and about across the Island’s road network during the early hours of tomorrow morning (Wednesday) for the first time this season.
Island Roads are anticipating low temperatures overnight, approaching 0c, resulting in the fleet undertaking a full salt run.
The PFI contractor relies on several sources of information to determine whether the network requires treatment. Firstly, there is a bespoke forecast supplied specifically for the Island by a national meteorological service and in addition to this Island Roads also receive continuous readings and information from 2 weather stations at Duxmore and Rowridge.
The salt supply at Island Roads’ winter maintenance depot at Stag Lane has already been topped up and the fleet are ready to go having completed a training run last week.
You can find out which roads will be treated at https://www.islandecho.co.uk/gritting-routes/.

Have they not seen the weather forecast???
When the time comes and we really need the roads treating, we won’t see island roads for dust…
Dust will be all that’s left of their salt supply!
Well done Island roads. Was certainly looking ready for it early this morning.
Since their depot is in Stag Lane and the St. Mary’s fiasco will be closed all night, I hope they remember to adjust their routes accordingly. Can you just picture half a dozen gritters stuck outside the hospital?
“Sorry, mate, you can’t come through here. More than my job’s worth to let you through.”
Someone wanting overtime i imagine.
So true
Totally unnecessary , roads were fine early this morning I notice from the gritting route map that not all bus routes will be treated!!!
Unknown why they grit when the ground is still warm ? If it was freezing understandable, but I remember 0 is freezing point, not 13 c.
