Gunwharf Quays – a popular mainland shopping spot for Islanders – has been given the green light to begin its next phase of a £45million investment project. Portsmouth City Council has granted planning permission for the second phase of Landsec’s £45million investment into Gunwharf Quays which will give visitors an improved full day-out experience at the UK’s leading waterfront outlet destination. Phase 2 of the investment is focused on Marlborough Square, one of the main points of arrival to Gunwharf Quays. Works will include enhancements to the entrance tunnel guests use when arriving via Portsmouth Harbour train station or from the Historic Dockyard. The approved plans feature improvements to the buildings’ external aesthetics, shopfronts, public realm and landscaping. There’ll be more seating for guests, as well as bigger and more modern guest washroom facilities to create a better all-day-out experience. The plans also include a new retail space to add to the diverse mix of retail brands at Gunwharf Quays. Works are expected to start in Winter 2024/2025. Yvonne Clay, Centre Director at Gunwharf Quays, commented:
“This planning consent marks a significant step in our long-term investment in Gunwharf Quays. We’re focused on making improvements to every moment our guests spend with us and ensuring we create the perfect environment for our retailers to continue to flourish. Along with our ongoing sustainability actions and strengthened local partnerships, this planning consent enables us to unlock even more value for Portsmouth.”
Over 500 members of the local community have helped Landsec refine its Vision Document and Design Guide for Gunwharf Quays, which provides over-arching design principles for future planning applications. Works on The Avenues have commenced and will progress over the next six-months. It’s anticipated that proposals for future phases of the £45m investment project will be shared later this year.

Shame it costs us so much to get there and back
£10 .00 return.£8.00 kids free and free parking with Solent Cruises from Cowes every Sat and Sun . daily during the School Holidays.
If this was New York passenger ferry crossing would be £2.50
The Island Ferry services is being run by crims
You do realise that those New York ferries are heavily subsided by New York itself so not really a fair comparison.
Suggest speak to our government about subsidising ferries, or the council can and increase council tax to pay for it.
If you can afford to shop in the overpriced “brand name” shops in Gunwharf Quays, you can afford the cost of whatever ferry you use to get there. Only for the well off where money is no object.
Island news???? How? Clutching at straws for story’s!
Where once there was no story, now there is one.
