Children at St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School in Carisbrooke have given their old shoes a new purpose by planting strawberries and pumpkins in them, in support of the community garden.
On Monday (19th May), pupils got hands-on with gardening as part of the ‘Chelsea Comes to Carisbrooke’ initiative, which has seen residents and organisations across the local area create imaginative plant displays using unusual containers.
The school’s contribution to the festival features a vibrant walkway of greenery sprouting from an assortment of footwear, all arranged along the school path. It forms part of a wider effort to support the nearby community garden.
Mrs Mauri, Head of School, has said:
“Wow! What a lovely display for our community to see. I would like to thank Louisa and Nadia for volunteering their support, helping the children and providing the amazing plants.
“Gardening supports a wide and varied curriculum and it is great the children are involved in a local community festival!”
The creative shoe planters will remain on display until Sunday (25th May), when the event will conclude with an open garden at The Dairy, 196 Carisbrooke Road – right next to the school.
The Friends of St Thomas’ will be serving teas from 14:00-17:00 to raise funds for the school.
What a great creative idea,

Well done.
