Residents in Sandown say that an attempt to cover up graffiti on the railway bridge as you enter the town is ‘just as bad’ as the graffiti itself.
As previously reported by Island Echo, South Western Railway pledged to remove the ‘no mask, no test, no vax, no brains’ graffiti that was sprayed onto the side of the bridge at Avenue Road earlier this year.
Attempts to scrub the message were unsuccessful according to local councillor Ian Ward BEM, so the decision was taken to paint over the wording with a blue/grey paint.
However, many have taken to social media to express their concerns that the block painting on an otherwise unpainted concrete wall stands out more than the graffiti does.
Cllr Ward says that South Western Railway have agreed to look at the situation again.

Blot on the landscape!
That’s no way to talk about Sandown!
We don’t do more than we have to.
We re not paid to think
Is it art? Why else would someone decide to use light blue. The more I look at it, I can really see something in it…
Wait a minute…it’s the old graffiti I can still see. Perfect!
Is there really nothing more worthwhile to spend money on?
Maybe allow someone with some real graffiti skills to produce something beautiful instead. There are actually some stunning artists around.
Is that a Banksy,!, looks more like a ——
Now a perfect surface to put advertising on.
Not a bad idea. Put up a proper advertising billboard.
What a stupid way to deal with that. The person who’s idea that was should be reprimanded and told to go sort it out personally. It would have only taken a high powered jet washer to get the graffiti off. It might have left a clean patch but it would have weathered back in.
The bridge though is owned by Network Rail. It is their responsibility to remove. Should have just left it to them.
Surely grey paint would of been a better choice of colour but how long will it be till the Graffiti is back theyve gave them a perfect canvas to re spray it on
Bit of paint stripper/ thinners and power wash. Like the idea of some cool graffiti art over the top better.
I pass it every day, it doesn’t bother me, its the least of Sandowns problems
Why is this even news? No-one gives a rats arse about a bit of blue paint on a wall.
A bit dssp dash I think, do not give a a child a large brush and paint pot
Just given a blank canvas to graffiti on more.
Should’ve ask the “Not Dead Yet” graffiti artist from Sandown to do a work there, he does some great stuff.
