The Isle of Wight took gold in the hammer, silver in the shooting (NPA Police Pistol 1) and another silver in the women’s 10,000 metres on Day 1 of the NatWest Island Games in Guernsey.
The 3 medals leave the Isle of Wight 4th in the medals table, behind hosts Guernsey, Jersey and Gotland.
Andy Frost has won our 1st gold medal in the hammer throw. He threw a distance of 55.12 metres to win the event, 1m and 19cm ahead of Genro Paas representing Saaremaa, who took silver.
Andy Frost also won gold in the 2011 Isle of Wight Island Games with a record throw of 70.61 metres.
The veteran athlete has a habit of taking gold in Island Games hammer events. He was also victorious in Shetland (2005), Rhodes (2007), Aland (2009) and Jersey (2015).
Amy Kelland took silver for the Isle of Wight in the 10,000 metres in a time of 37:13.77, 18 seconds behind gold medallist Sarah Roe from Guernsey.
Jai Nolan also won silver in the NPA Police Pistol 1 competition behind another Guernsey competitor, Andrew Torode.
In the football tournament, the Isle of Wight got off to a winning start by overcoming Aland 2-0. Jake Scrimshaw was the scorer of both goals, the 1st a penalty.

In basketball. the Isle of Wight won their 1st game in the group stages, beating the Faroe Islands 73-63.
The Isle of Wight badminton team were victorious in their 1st contest, winning 5-0 against Bermuda.
Day 2 sees the Isle of Wight competing in numerous events from archery, athletics and badminton to sailing, shooting, swimming and table tennis.
Both the men’s and women’s football teams are in action. The Isle of Wight’s men’s team face the Western Isles with kick off at 14:30. The women’s team play their 1st match against the Isle of Man at 10:30.

In basketball, team Isle of Wight have a difficult tie against Saaremaa at 16:30.
