The Isle of Wight hockey sides enjoyed a mixed weekend with wins, draws and a narrow cup exit across league and cup action.
LADIES’ 1XI FALL JUST SHORT DESPITE STRONG RESPONSE
The Island Ladies fought back well but couldn’t recover from a slow start against Portsmouth.
Portsmouth started quickly and punished early errors to take control, leaving the hosts chasing the game.
After half time, the Island improved significantly. Saffron Hart, Claire Caddick, Emily Lord, Dani Devenish and Hannah Pocock tightened up defensively, allowing more composed build-up play.
Jaimie Payne led the midfield effort, supported by Polly Rider, Sophie Parkhouse, Lizzie Dodds and Mia Lawrence, who drove the team forward.
Hart pulled a goal back from a short corner, but despite late pressure, the equaliser never came.

MEN’S 2XI SHARE THRILLING DRAW
The Men’s 2XI played out an entertaining draw with Gillingham in a high-tempo contest.
After falling behind early, the Island responded quickly, setting the tone for a game where neither side could pull clear.
Nate Bower made key saves in goal, while Jarrod Butler, Toby Noyes and Stuart Allen impressed defensively, with Allen producing a crucial goal-line clearance.
Steve Holbrook, Carl Joyce and Peter McClelland worked tirelessly in midfield, linking play and regaining possession.
Stephen Woodford scored a hat-trick, with Mike Dodds also on target. Kensei Parker and Rupert King added pace and width, while John “JP” Pearson nearly snatched a late winner.
A special mention goes to Cian, who umpired his first men’s match with confidence.

LADIES’ 1XI EXIT CUP AFTER SHOOTOUT DRAMA
The Ladies’ 1XI were narrowly beaten in a cup quarter-final decided by shuffles.
Blandford started strongly, but the Island grew into the game through Sophie Parkhouse, Polly Rider, Lizzie Dodds and Layla Holbrook in midfield.
After a goalless first half, Blandford took the lead before the Island responded quickly through Hart from a short corner.
With no winner in normal time, the tie went to shuffles. Fairhurst and Hart scored for the Island, while goalkeeper Blue made key saves, but Blandford edged the shootout.

U16 BOYS SHOW CHARACTER IN FINAL MATCH
The U16 Boys ended their season with a determined performance and draw against Basingstoke.
With no substitutes and several players in their third game of the weekend, the Island matched their opponents throughout.
Will and Ed stood firm defensively, while Seb controlled midfield play. Goals from Cooper Woodford and Nate Bower ensured the Island responded each time.
It was a fitting final outing, full of effort and teamwork.
