The rural village of Chillerton is gearing up for the annual Scarecrow Festival, which gets underway this weekend (Saturday). It is anticipated that there will be over 100 scarecrows to see in the Island’s quirkiest festival, from traditional gallybaggers to those on a more modern theme. This year’s event is being coordinated by Chillerton and Gatcombe Community Association. The festival has been running bi-annually since 2010 and is an event that the 2 villages of Chillerton and Gatcombe put on for the enjoyment of Islanders and visitors over the half-term break. Aunt Sally’s Tea Rooms will be open in the Village Hall from 11:00-16:00 throughout the entirety of the festival. Scarecrow maps will be available from the Village Hall and The Gallybagger Inn nearer the time, with a public vote set to be held to find the festival’s best scarecrow – as voted for by the public! The Scarecrow Festival runs from Saturday 25th May – Saturday 1st June. Below is a selection of exhibits that are on show in the village today (Tuesday) ahead of the first day of the 2024 Scarecrow Festival on Saturday.

You’d have thought pop up Bob would have used this as a photo opp, although in fairness, the scarecrows do more for the island than he does.
Bob did display his own scarecrow a few years ago when he lived in Chillerton. No doubt he will be along at some point in the week to lend his support.
Ryde are having their own similar show this year.
Theme is wasted zombie / tramp
Without too much effort required for most to enter.
