A popular restaurant in Ryde has applied for planning permission to convert multiple parking spaces directly outside into an outdoor dining area in hopes of ‘enhancing’ Ryde’s atmosphere.
Fumo33, the contemporary Asian fusion dining spot on the top-end of Union Street, has applied to County Hall to remove 2 parking spaces from the busy street, converting them into an external seating area for 12 diners.
The shopping and dining destination has a 1-hour no return policy, making it a come-and-go system, which business owners have previously said is key for bringing in trade.
The plan outlines black paving, new railings and new kerbstones to be installed, creating a sectioned-off space which Fumo hopes will attract tourists as well as add to Ryde’s economy.
Back in 2018, Ryde Town Council proposed the introduction of parking charges along Union Street, which was met by uproar from local traders and members of the public, arguing that these ‘free’ spaces are crucial for the elderly in order to visit pharmacies and other essential shops.
Fumo owns 2 other restaurants across the Isle of Wight – Cibo on Wootton High Street and Toto in St Thomas’ Square, Newport.

no, that will fail miserably – why on earth would you want to sit their eating food, with a side order of exhaust fumes
it is a road with parking spaces for people to use the shops – those spaces don’t belong to that eatery, they are there for the benefit of all shops
What’s the problem, just do what most businesses do in
Union Street, there are a few that leave their car and van outside
their businesses for hours and the useless Civil Enforcement
Officers don’t do anything about it.
I wonder if the business owners offer them freebies
Lol
I wouldn’t risk dining in a parking space amongst traffic seeking a spot to dive into. The driving skills & sobriety of many on the island don’t fill me with confidence
This is not a good idea, there is hardly anywhere on the island you can park free and only a few of the the remaining banks where customers can actually go into a branch are in Ryde
Leave Union Street as it is. Taking two spaces away, would not be two but will amount to at least three when in place. Fumes from exhausts would surely hinder anyone dining there.
The smoke won’t worry most of them as they will be vaping!
Good luck, I think it’s a brilliant idea.
