Former Ventnor batsman Travis Head has scored 152 runs against England in the 1st test of the Ashes series at the Gabba in Brisbane, Australia.
Travis reached his total in just 148 balls; his innings included 14 fours and 4 sixes.
The 27-year-old left-hander played a season for Ventnor Cricket Club in 2013 when he topped the Southern Premier League batting averages by scoring 733 runs.
At the age of 18, Travis was one of Hampshire’s International Academy intake. His selection for Ventnor was more due to luck than design as 5 clubs volunteered to include one of the promising youngsters in their sides. 5 names were pulled out of the hat, and Ventnor were fortunate enough to draw Travis.
Ian Hillsum, who often partnered Travis when playing for Ventnor, told the Cricket Paper in 2019:
“Travis was great, on and off the pitch. He was class. Absolute class. He wasn’t someone who went around giving it the ‘big I am’, he was very down to earth, just one of the boys, really.”
Australia scored 425 in their 1st innings in reply to England’s poor total of 147. At the end of the 3rd days play, England had reached 220-2 and were still trailing Australia in their 2nd innings by 58 runs with 8 wickets remaining.
