Incidents of illegal fly-tipping at Briddlesford Woods, which is home to a diverse array of rare wildlife including hazel dormice and red squirrels, are increasing, wildlife charity People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) warns.
PTES, who has owned Briddlesford Woods since 1992, warns that fly-tipping at Lynn Common – just a stone’s throw away from Lynnbottom Tip – is damaging precious flora and fauna across the nature reserve.
Now, the charity is calling for anyone who sees rubbish being dumped at Lynn Common or in any part of Briddlesford Woods to report the vehicle(s) involved to the Isle of Wight Council, Hampshire Police (via 101) or to PTES directly via [email protected].
Laura Bower, Conservation Officer at PTES, says:
“Briddlesford is a unique woodland; not only is it one of the few places in the UK where both hazel dormice and red squirrels (classified as Vulnerable and Endangered on the Red List for Britain’s Mammals earlier this year) can be found, but it’s also home to two rare species of bat, barbastelles (also listed as Vulnerable) and Bechstein’s.”
“Briddlesford is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area for Conservation, which gives it the highest legal protection. But sadly, this doesn’t prevent fly-tipping from happening. We’ve been working tirelessly over the last 20 years to maintain this special habitat so that local flora and fauna can flourish. Our conservation work will be undone if fly-tipping continues, so we are urging for this to stop, for waste to be disposed of correctly and for any incidents to be reported.”
“On top of the damage fly-tipping causes to our beautiful woodland, we also have to pay for the rubbish to be removed, which is a cost to the charity that should be spent on much-needed conservation.”
To report any incidents of fly-tipping at Lynn Common or in any part of Briddlesford Woods, contact the Isle of Wight Council, Hampshire Police (via 101) or PTES directly via [email protected].

Disgusting low life people doing this. Hidden cameras are cheap, but unless courts hit hard, all pointless. Poor animals will suffer now.
Agree entirely with you. Only problem is, island judges are way too soft, sentences over here are a waste of time and no deterrent at all.
I suspect it’s because most judges were criminals themselves at one point. Gotta be soft on your own kind.
Dont tell me this was done by the mainlanders! or was the people that are moving to the new builds! No its local people and I am sure the answer to who it was lies with the someone reading the paper! Just take a look at the items and think! old tyres! workmans rubbish along with broken pallets and old cooking pots so looks like a rear garden clearance
Who here is saying it were mainlanders? Stop listening to the voices in your head.
B*stards! More needs to be done to catch these people. Place cameras in the trees.
I don’t condone fly tipping in any way at all but the way the tip is run now makes it incredibly difficult for people to dispose of waste. The current covid rules and booking system makes it hard to get appointments at convenient times. They dictate to you when you come. They don’t allow trailers, private vans or even your car with the seats down, these are all weigh bridge chargeable at even more restricted times or with special conditions imposed. And with the short opening hours under AMEY it does make it hard for people.
Couple all of this and the attitude of some of the staff there and the vehicle destroying speed bump at the top of the hill, its a recipe for disaster.
Gone are the days that you could just load the car up and head to the tip.
I don’t agree with fly tipping but it does not surprise me in this day and age.
We have seen the same Truck parked there several times, allways loaded with rubbish.
The Driver looks very unkempt, i have said on many occasion he will dump that lot once we have gone.
I’m sure with the Make, green writing and part of the Reg, he can now be traced.
I am equally ‘sure’ that with no proof then NOTHING will happen to him.
Doubt Police will even bother to check it out.
Trouble is not easy to report ,101 if they do answer tell you report on line, iow council take ages to answer and also tell you do online. In old day’s had litter hot line report number ,we have same for fly tipping and catch people – the fines would fund the service.
If tip was open as normal and sensible hours might reduce some of this ?.
do not charge for the tip then – problem solved.
If they made the tips free and added it to business rates it would help stop the problem.
