The Environment Agency has 2 flood alerts in place for the Isle of Wight, with areas around both the Eastern Yar and Lukely Brook under threat.
Some 40mm of rainfall was recorded at Wroxall yesterday (Sunday), with further rain experienced overnight and into this morning. That’s more than half a month’s rain in a very short period of time and comes following an extremely wet November.
As a result, minor impact flooding is possible at Langbridge and Alverstone Road Bridge this morning where the river will be close to the top of the riverbank. At Sandown, the river will continue to rise until at least 16:00 this afternoon, when minor out-of-bank flooding is possible.
Property flooding could be possible if further rainfall today affects the catchment.
Meanwhile, in Newport, over 26mm of rain has been recorded at Carisbrooke, which is putting pressure on the Lukely Brook.
Vulnerable areas are Old Westminster Lane and the Aquatics Centre at Vicarage Walk near Foxes Road.
Operational contractors are out in the area making sure rivers are kept free of blockages with all debris screens currently clear, allowing the river to flow freely.
Officials say a flood warning may be issued for the Lukely Brook if the risk of property flooding increases.
