A flood alert has been issued for coastal areas around the Isle of Wight due to high tides and strong winds expected from Storm Bram tomorrow (Tuesday).
The Environment Agency warns that flooding is possible for up to 1 hour either side of the afternoon high tide at 14:00, as Storm Bram causes elevated sea levels and large waves.
Forecasts show the total tide level could reach 4.68 metres Chart Datum (2.09 metres Above Ordnance Datum) at Cowes, an increase of 0.57 metres above standard predictions. A strong south-westerly wind, reaching Force 7, is also expected.
While Cowes is likely to avoid major impacts due to its sheltered location, other areas including Yarmouth, Freshwater Bay, Sandown, Shanklin, Gurnard and Ryde are at greater risk.
Wave action is expected to cause spray overtopping and overwashing of sea defences, which may result in flooding of esplanades, seafront car parks and adjacent roads.
At this time, no property flooding is expected. Wednesday’s early morning tide at 03:03 (10th December) is forecast to be 54cm lower, reducing the overall risk.
Residents and coastal visitors are advised to take care around exposed locations and to avoid seafront areas during high tide.
